Union Street is a major street and shopping district in Aberdeen's city centre. Named after the Acts of Union 1800 that unified Great Britain with Ireland, the street was built to relieve congested streets leading into the city. The road sits higher than the old town and was designed at the start of the nineteenth century by Charles Abercrombie. Completed between 1801 and 1805, the Union Bridge was built across the Denburn River. The river has long since been covered by a dual carriageway road. The section from Watergate to Holburn Junction is also known as the Granite Mile thanks to the appearance of the buildings lining the street. Several major shops are found on and near Union Street, including Austin Reed, Debenhams in the Trinity Centre, Hugo Boss, Marks and Spencer on St. Nicholas Street, Waterstones, and many others. Nearby shopping centres include St Nicholas & Bon Accord and the Trinity Shopping Centre. There are also a number of nightclubs on Union Street as well as restaurants and pubs.
